but having married the daughter of Heli, and being perhaps adopted by him, he was called his son, and as such was entered in the public registers; Mary not being mentioned, because the Hebrews never permitted the name of a woman to enter the genealogical tables, but inserted her husband as the son of him who was, in reality, but his father-in-law. Hence it appears that Matthew, who wrote principally for the Jews, traces the pedigree of Jesus Christ from Abraham, through whom the promises were given to the Jews, to David, and from David, through the line of Solomon, to Jacob the father of Joseph, the reputed or legal father of Christ; and that Luke, who wrote for the Gentiles, extends his genealogy upwards from Heli, the father of Mary, through the line of Nathan, to David, and from David to Abraham, and from Abraham to Adam, who was the immediate "son of God" by creation, and to whom the promise of the Saviour was given in behalf of himself and all his posterity. The two branches of descent from David, by Solomon and Nathan, being thus united in the persons of Mary and Joseph, Jesus the son of Mary re-united in himself all the blood, privileges, and rights, of the whole family of David; in consequence of which he is emphatically called "the Son of David.ReciprocalGenesis 9:26 - the Lord; 2 Samuel 5:4 - thirty; Ezekiel 1:1 - in the thirtieth; Luke 2:4 - Joseph; Romans 9:5 - of whom

Maundrell states that the place shown him for this city, called Sarphan, consisted of only a few houses, on the tops of the mountains, within about half a mile of the sea; between which there were ruins of considerable extent.Reciprocal1 Kings 17:1 - Elijah; John 17:12 - and Verse 27Eliseus1 Kings 19:19-21, ElishasavingMatthew 12:4; John 17:12 Naaman2 Kings 5:1-27; Job 21:22, 33:13, 36:23; Daniel 4:35ReciprocalGenesis 25:20 - the Syrian; Leviticus 14:3 - be healed; 1 Kings 19:16 - Elisha; 2 Kings 5:14 - and he was clean; Matthew 8:2 - a leper Verse 28wereLuke 6:11, 11:53, 11:54; 2 Chronicles 16:10, 24:20, 24:21; Jeremiah 37:15, 37:16, 38:6; Acts 5:33; 7:54, 22:21-23; 1 Thessalonians 2:15, 2:16ReciprocalHosea 14:9 - but; John 1:46 - Can; Habakkuk 3:1 - contradiction Verse 29and thrustJohn 8:37, 8:40, 8:59, 15:24, 15:25; Acts 7:57, 7:58, 16:23, 16:24, 21:28-32 browor, edgethat2 Chronicles 25:12; Psalm 37:14, 37:32, 37:33ReciprocalNumbers 35:20 - if he thrust; Hosea 14:9 - but; Matthew 10:23 - when; John 1:46 - Can; 10:39 - General; Acts 5:33 - they; 21:30 - and they; Habakkuk 3:1 - contradiction Verse 30John 8:59, 10:39, 18:6, 18:7; Acts 12:18Reciprocal1 Samuel 18:11 - And David; 19:10 - he slipped; Matthew 4:13 - leaving; Luke 24:31 - vanished out of their sight; John 5:13 - had; 20:14 - and knew Verse 31cameMatthew 4:13; Mark 1:21 taughtMatthew 10:23; Acts 13:50-52, 14:1, 14:2, 14:6, 14:7, 14:19-21, 17:1-3, 17:10, 17:11, 17:16, 17:17, 18:4; 20:1, 20:2, 20:23, 20:24ReciprocalMatthew 4:12 - when; Mark 6:2 - he began; 6:6 - And he went; Luke 6:6 - he; John 6:59 - in the Verse 32Luke 4:36; Jeremiah 23:28, 23:29; Matthew 7:28, 7:29; Mark 1:22; John 6:63; 1 Corinthians 2:4, 2:5, 14:24, 14:25; 2 Corinthians 4:2, 10:4, 10:5; 1 Thessalonians 1:5; Titus 2:15; Habakkuk 3:1, 3:1ReciprocalMark 6:2 - he began; Luke 2:47 - General; 5:9 - he; John 4:41 - because Verse 33Mark 1:23ReciprocalMatthew 4:24 - possessed; Luke 8:28 - he cried; Acts 10:38 - healing; 19:15 - General Verse 34Let us aloneor, Away, Luke 8:37; Acts 16:39 whatLuke 4:41, 8:28; Matthew 8:29; Mark 1:24, 1:34, 5:7; James 2:19 artGenesis 3:15; Habakkuk 2:14; 1 John 3:8; Revelation 20:2 the Holy OneLuke 1:35; Psalm 16:10; Daniel 9:24; Acts 2:27, 3:14, 4:27; Revelation 3:7Reciprocal1 Kings 17:18 - What have I; Daniel 4:13 - an holy; Acts 16:17 - These; 1 John 2:20 - the Holy Verse 35JesusLuke 4:39, 4:41; Psalm 50:16; Zechariah 3:2; Matthew 8:26, 17:18; Mark 3:11, 3:12; Acts 16:17, 16:18 thrownLuke 9:39, 9:42, 11:22; Mark 1:26, 9:26; Revelation 12:12ReciprocalMatthew 8:9 - Go; Mark 1:25 - rebuked; 9:20 - the spirit; 9:25 - he rebuked Verse 36They wereMatthew 9:33, 12:22, 12:23; Mark 1:27, 7:37 WhatLuke 4:32, 10:17-20; Mark 16:17-20; Acts 19:12-16 they come1 Peter 3:22ReciprocalPsalm 29:4 - powerful; Isaiah 52:14 - many; Matthew 8:9 - Go; 17:18 - rebuked; Mark 4:41 - What; Luke 2:18 - wondered; 5:9 - he; 7:7 - but; 9:43 - amazed; Acts 3:10 - they were; Titus 2:15 - with Verse 37the fameΗχος [G2279], the sound; a very elegant metaphor, says Dr. Adam Clarke.
