Verse 2outIsaiah 65:4; Luke 8:27 a manMatthew gives a brief account of two demoniacs who were dispossessed on this occasion; but Mark and Luke omit the mention of one (who was perhaps not so remarkable). That these wretched men were not merely mad, as some suppose, but really possessed of evil spirits, appears clearly from the language employed, as well as from the narrative itself. Matthew expressly affirms that they were "possessed with devils," or demoniacs, δαιμονιζομενοι [G1139]; Mark says he had "an unclean spirit," i.e., a fallen spirit; and Luke asserts, that he "had devils (or demons) a long time," and was called Legion, "because many devils were entered into him." With supernatural strength the demons burst asunder the chains and fetters with which he was bound; they address Christ as the "Son of the most high God;" they beseech him to suffer them to enter into the swine; and when he had given them leave, they "went out and entered into the swine," etc.withMark 5:8, 1:23, 1:26, 3:30, 7:25; Luke 9:42ReciprocalMatthew 4:24 - possessed; 8:28 - coming Verse 3Mark 9:18-22; Isaiah 65:4; Daniel 4:32, 4:33; Luke 8:29ReciprocalDaniel 4:25 - drive; Mark 9:20 - the spirit; Acts 19:16 - General; Revelation 18:2 - become Verse 4tameJames 3:7, 3:8ReciprocalDaniel 4:16 - be changed; 4:25 - drive; Matthew 17:15 - for ofttimes; Mark 5:15 - him that; Luke 9:39 - lo; Acts 19:16 - General Verse 5crying1 Kings 18:28; Job 2:7, 2:8; John 8:44ReciprocalLeviticus 19:28 - cuttings; Jeremiah 47:5 - how; 48:37 - cuttings; Daniel 4:16 - be changed; Matthew 17:15 - for ofttimes; Mark 3:11 - unclean; Luke 9:39 - lo Verse 6he ranPsalm 66:3 *marg. 72:9; Luke 4:41; Acts 16:17; James 2:19ReciprocalMatthew 8:2 - worshipped; Mark 3:11 - unclean; Luke 8:28 - he cried Verse 7WhatMark 1:24; Hosea 14:8; Matthew 8:29; Luke 4:34 SonMark 3:11, 14:61; Matthew 16:16; John 20:31; Acts 8:37, 16:17 I adjure1 Kings 22:16; Matthew 26:63; Acts 19:13 thatGenesis 3:15; Matthew 8:29; Luke 8:28; Romans 16:20; Habakkuk 2:14; 2 Peter 2:4; 1 John 3:8; Jude 1:6; Revelation 12:12, 20:1-3ReciprocalExodus 14:12 - Let us alone; 1 Kings 17:18 - art thou come; 2 Chronicles 18:15 - shall I adjure; Micah 6:6 - the high; Matthew 8:31 - General; 12:43 - seeking; Mark 5:17 - General; 5:18 - prayed; 9:25 - he rebuked; Luke 1:32 - the Son; 1 Thessalonians 5:27 - I charge; Habakkuk 3:1 - the most; James 2:19 - the; Revelation 20:2 - he laid Verse 8Mark 1:25, 9:25, 9:26; Acts 16:18ReciprocalMatthew 8:16 - and he; 17:18 - rebuked; Mark 5:2 - with; Luke 8:29 - commanded Verse 9WhatLuke 8:30, 11:21-26 LegionMatthew 12:45, 26:53ReciprocalActs 19:15 - General Verse 10Mark 5:13, 3:22ReciprocalLuke 11:24 - I will Verse 11herdLeviticus 11:7, 11:8; Deuteronomy 14:8; Isaiah 65:4, 66:3; Matthew 8:30; Luke 8:32
